Party City is the largest party retailer in the country and offers a wide range of party items, clothing and accessories for men, women and children. Party City Evansville is also a Halloween store, offering everything from Halloween costumes to animated props, Halloween decorations and more. The Evansville outlet has more than 1,000 stores in Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, Tennessee and Indiana.

One of the biggest fears of many Sears executives was that the store would take away the business from the company's profitable catalog business. Rosenwald, Kittle and Wood believed that the city and farming community would continue to order Sears catalogs. They also believed that city dwellers would rather shop in the shops than buy goods by mail order.

The strategy the men developed made Sears a retail outlet, and Sears opened retail stores in New York City, Chicago, Philadelphia, Detroit, Los Angeles and Chicago. The factory produced a wide range of new consumer goods, including man-made fabrics, clothing, shoes, toys, furniture and other consumer goods.

Sears management struggled to create a new Sears retail system that leveraged the existing catalog buying and distribution organization. Finding the right product mix was not as easy as creating the organizational structure that made the retail and store system work, or finding qualified staff to run the new stores. As Wood put it: "When you go over the counter and it's as green as grass," and there are lots of mistakes.

Julius Rosenwald began this process when he hired Charles Kittle as the new president of Sears. He wanted to know firsthand what problems businesses had and what company policies could be changed to make them do their jobs better. Wood took over the presidency at Sears after Kitties died suddenly in 1928 and Rosen Waldwald retired in 1932. After stepping down from Montgomery Ward's to open a retail store, Wood was hired by Rosenfeld as vice president in 1933.

The move into retail was not easy, and Wood spent a lot of time visiting the store. The success of Sears' retail business was reflected in the decades ahead, but not in all.
